Hi all. I was thinking about if it is possible to make a feature which sends you an email message whenever someone has replied to your board topic. Of course not for every post you make but at least for the topics you create?

I like the idea, and I've seen it done on other sites.

i guess it's a nice idea. though do you mean that you'd like an email for the first reply only? or an email everytime somebody posts to one of your topics? i'd imagine, especially if it was a popular topic, that that would get a tad anoying after a while. also if the admins do decide to go for this idea could we have some way of turning that feature off? i can certainly see why people would like it, and find it useful, but i don't think it's something i'd personally use.

lol I wouldn't use it either. It'll just be more junk for my inbox!

That's so cool
I'd love it! This may be annoying but I wouldn't mind getting one for every board post!

I agree with Dan and Michelle. It's a nice feature for those who want it, but I would like to have a choice about it. I visit one author's web site where there is a choice to "subscribe to this topic." If you enter on that link you get an e-mail every time anew post is submitted to that topic. I have accidently entered on that link a couple times instead of just the "post comment" link, and it is annoying to get all those e-mails. If I want to read other posts to that same topic, I can do that easily enough without being notified by e-mail.

perhaps it could be set up as an option in "My profile". have the sight send an alert every time a topic is responded too, an alert only after the first response, or no alerts at all. i think that would work.

well, I think a check box would be good. You could check whenever you wanted to be notified that someone replied to your topic, then if you got tired of being notified all the time, you could uncheck the check box.

yes that sounds workable too. i'm sure it could be figured out anyway so that only those who wanted to use the feature could, while the rest could be without it.

Yeah, I agree that it can be a choice in the our Profiles. This could be especially useful if someone asks an important question and needs to know when she or he has gotten an answer. It would also just be interesting even if you weren't asking an important question.

yes i've seen this done before, it's pretty standard on most php styled forums. i use it myself i can't say that i don't and i'd like to see something like that implemented here. only topics that you are active in though, and only post once, not every time anothe person posts. so you respond, someone responds and you get notified. but you won't get notified again until you either view the topic again or post to it.

Well, maybe for the first, and maybe for the rest of the replies you maybe can send an email for every ... 3, 4 or 5 replies if there are many.

Oh yeah and I agree, an option, that would be great too.

Post 14 by wonderwoman (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Sunday, 12-Feb-2006 21:07:59

instead of 1 message every time someone replies, how about one message telling you how many replies your topic got, it would say something like, there 10 replies to your post.

whoo lost track wonderwoman lol. i agree with this post and lets say that you have a combo like the qn's. that says allows all emails for each reply, one email for every 10 replys, or no replys. love the idea and would use it sometimes.

Post 16 by Inesle1987 (Account disabled) on Monday, 13-Feb-2006 2:59:03

That would be a good idea. I like both of your suggestions.

This idea is cool

Post 18 by Inesle1987 (Account disabled) on Monday, 13-Feb-2006 16:01:54

And I think the messages should contain the topic title ... you never know, how many topics you have created at once. Lol

Post 19 by wonderwoman (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Monday, 13-Feb-2006 20:08:22

yeah, and if you post a lot of them, you could lose track easily

Post 20 by laced-unlaced (Account disabled) on Tuesday, 14-Feb-2006 12:41:42

hey yes.

i like the idea.

perhaps only once? so that next time you visit you get more.

if you don't go online then no more emails

Post 21 by maddog (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Tuesday, 14-Feb-2006 17:16:37

Yes, I really like this idea too! I'll bring it up with either J or Chris! I think though, that there was talk of doing something like that, but, we shall see, and I'll post, or have one of them post, when we can give you all more information.
